What happens to our lips as we age?

When we consider the effects of aging in the skin, we often move beyond the lips. However, the lips are one facial feature that suffers the most. To understand why this is it helps to know what tissues the lips are composed of and how we use them. The lips are primarily made of fatty tissues, all supported by a mass of muscle around the mouth to allow facial expression, speech formation and assistance with food consumption.

The topical layers of the lips are very thin compared to other areas of our skin which is why it looks smoother and softer. Unlike the other regions of the skin that are given a variety of protection mechanisms deep within layers of the dermis, the lips are not offered any type of internal or external protection. This is why we often see thinning lips that are dry, chapped and cracked in harsher weather conditions. Hyaluronic acid dermal fillers are the best method of injection to act as a supplement for internal hydration and protection, with the added benefits of volume and perfected shape.

What types of dermal fillers do we use during lip augmentation?

There are a few different dermal fillers that we can use in lip augmentation treatments. Dermal fillers that will increase volume safely within the lips are composed of hyaluronic acid (HA) which is a natural component made in the body, but slightly modified to contain lidocaine. Lidocaine is added to these dermal fillers as it helps to promote comfort during the injection process. Many patients prefer these dermal fillers to other methods such as fat injection because of the immediacy of results and lowered risk for reaction to occur.

During our lip augmentation specific treatments, the most common dermal fillers are Juvederm and Restylane. Juvederm has recently been approved in 2015 for use in the lips specifically.

Lip Augmentation Procedure

The method of implementing injections for lip augmentation works best with hyaluronic acid dermal fillers, and we recommend one of the two listed above to get started. Hyaluronic acid is best for lip augmentation because of its ability to be controlled in volumizing treatments that will shape the lips to your desired results. As the physician injects the filler into the lips with the use of a small needle, the lips will begin to take shape and increase in size slightly. The physician will shape the lips as previously discussed to client specifications, massaging out any bumps that can form during the treatment. Up to three sessions of injections may be required to reach full augmentation of the lips; these sessions will be spaced out by at least four weeks.

After the injection procedure, there may be some slight swelling or bruising that will be reduced within a few days following injection. Rarely do we see any side effects with these lip augmentation injections and will recommend one of the three that we offer based on the client’s comfort levels and skin sensitivity.
