Age takes its toll on the face in many ways. While treatments of the past have tended to focus on reducing the appearance of fine lines and facial creases, they didn’t always do much to restore volume to hollowing areas like the cheeks. Now, new formulations in soft tissue fillers are allowing surgeons to restore that volume to various areas of the face and achieve a more youthful facial profile. Hyaluronic Acid: The Volumizing Ingredient
The active ingredient in many volumizing dermal fillers is hyaluronic acid, a substance naturally produced by the body to support the underlying skin structure and help the skin retain moisture. As we age, our bodies produce less hyaluronic acid, leading to loose, sagging skin and the appearance of facial creases. By restoring hyaluronic acid to the skin structure, we can reverse some of those aging signs, including loose skin caused by loss of facial volume.
Treatment Areas
There are a number of areas where we can restore youthful volume:
- Sagging skin under the eye that leads to a tired appearance
- Loss of cheek fullness, which creates a hollow, aged look
- Volume loss in lips that emphasize fine lines around the mouth
- Loose skin around the jawline that gives the appearance of jowling
In addition to restoring volume in problem areas, injectable treatments minimize the appearance of sagging skin, for a firmer, more youthful appearance overall.
Procedure and Results
Dermal filler treatments take just a few minutes to complete and do not require any downtime afterward. Many of the new formulations include lidocaine in the mix, to make the procedure more comfortable for patients. Specific formulations will vary based on the specific needs of the patient and the areas to be treated.
As a general rule, we tend to use Juvederm XC to restore volume to the lips, thanks to its smooth texture and results that last for up to one year. Cheek treatments may be performed using Voluma, a formula specifically designed for larger treatment areas with results that last up to two years in some patients. Other potential fillers include Perlane, Belotero and Restylane.
You will be able to see your results immediately following a filler treatment, and results may continue to improve over time with some formulations. While results are temporary, some formulas offer long-lasting results that do not require touch-ups for a number of months or even years.
